In addition to performances of two orchestral works, the Residency will include: free Symphony Connect chamber concerts of additional works by Thomas and others selected by the composer; featuring small ensembles of ESA musicians, performances will take place in nontraditional music venues, including human service agencies, across greater Eugene and are designed to broaden community access to high-quality music experiences; “Inside the Composer’s Studio” discussion with a chamber performance of Thomas works at Eugene Public Library; free pre-concert discussions with the composer for ESA patrons and the general public, held prior to each subscription performance (Hult Center); regional broadcasts of both subscription concerts on classical music radio KWAX; a collaboration with two area high school bands to rehearse and perform Thomas’ Magneticfireflies; lectures and master classes by the composer and guest artists for undergraduate/graduate music students.

WORLD PREMIERE of SONOROUS EARTH for percussion quartet and orchestra will be presented by The Chicago Philharmonic Society and Grammy-winning Third Coast Percussion conducted by Scott Speck in Harris Theater for Music and Dance, Chicago. Featuring 300 bells from all over the world, SONOROUS EARTH can be thought of as a united nations of resonances. The project is conceived as a cultural statement celebrating interdependence and commonality across all cultures.
